The Pro-Choice Symbol
Many people recognise a woman’s moral authority to decide whether she will continue a pregnancy. And many also think that a woman should have the information and services that would allow her to best manage her fertility.
In the context of Caribbean societies, however, those views are often portrayed as being unpopular, even taboo. They are not.
By assigning an image to the pro-choice position—one that can be used on T-shirts and stickers, pins and bookmarks—we can declare our stance. We can say to the people around us “This is my view. Let’s talk about it”.
The key shape was chosen since it’s a universal sign of independence. We use it to symbolize people’s autonomy over their bodies. The F at the key’s base stands for “female” and “freedom”, reminding us that abortion is both a women’s issue and a human rights issue.
